Chartwork and Position Fixing on the Thames

What better way to spend a Sunday than on a boat cruising down the Thames Estuary to Canvey Island? After a day of navigation theory in the classroom, we boarded Londinium 1, the City of London Maritime Volunteer Service’s motor launch, to put our new skills into practice.

Londinium 1, at its mooring next to Tower Bridge

We headed out with the tide through the Thames Barrier:

And took it in turns to plan the passage, navigate and steer:

Thanks again to MVS City of London for the help in qualifying 8 new Clidive navigators and wreck-finders.
